Adulteration is basically the action of making something poorer in quality by the addition of another substance. There are several types of adulteration and milk adulteration is one of major types of food adulteration. Consequently milk adulteration is the process of making milk poorer in quality by addition of harmful substances.
How is Milk adulterated?
Precisely milk adulteration is of two types listed below:
Incidental Adulteration :
In this kind adulterants are added due to negligence or lack of proper resources. For instance common milk men use ice which melts down to deteriorate quality of water. Furthermore while pouring or packaging milk several unnecessary particles like dust and microorganisms find their way into milk.
This kind of adulteration is unfortunately quite common in our country. The adulterants are added deliberately to increase profit of sales.
No doubt water remains the most common milk adulterant, in addition to this detergents, caustic soda, glucose, and white paint also become part of milk adulterant list. Adulterants are used to add thickness and viscosity of milk but it makes the milk worse to consume.
